Why I built Fanal

I've been thinking a lot about how much evidence gets collected on us just going about our day. You can't drive down the street without a camera logging it. Most of that footage is never looked at by a person. Software stitches it together, and the companies that run the cameras sell access to whoever pays.

Your car may already have a black box that reports to insurers and others. I wanted one that reports to me. So I built Fanal: an encrypted record of my own trips, kept on my phone, that nobody else controls.

It's early, and I'm working on it every week. That's why I want people I trust testing it and telling me what to fix.

A report you can hand to someone

Open a trip and tap export. You get a report built from your record, free during the beta.

  • Local and UTC times, GPS accuracy, and an integrity check on every point
  • A PDF people can read, plus a data file anyone can verify
  • A letter you can send to request the city's own records
  • It shows what your phone measured. It can't promise how things turn out.

Free during the beta

Recording and the camera map stay free. We'll add paid options, like Evidence Reports and Pro features, before launch, and beta testers will hear first.

What Fanal can't do

GPS drifts, especially between tall buildings. Camera locations come from public data and can be out of date, so a pin doesn't guarantee a camera is there. Fanal isn't for navigation or emergencies. A report is solid evidence of what your phone recorded, but it isn't legal advice and can't promise how a dispute ends.

Questions

What people ask before they install it.

Your route, speed, and timing for each trip, in an encrypted log on your phone. Video is optional and sits beside it. Each point is linked to the one before it, so if anything is changed later, the report shows it.
